From 09:30 on Saturday morning the Railway
will be running a train timetable for 33 consecutive
hours through the night until 6:30 Sunday evening. This timetable will be the first of its kind in
RH&DR history and is sure to be an exciting experience for all.

Saturday morning will begin with a parallel run
departing New Romney to ease into the days
activities as the Railway begins to run the most
intense service ever attempted throughout the
Hythe section before reducing to hourly running
as we continue into the night.

Sunday will play host to Hercules’ 90 mile
challenge and will end with a procession of all
steam engines (that can travel through the tunnel)
for a trip around Dungeness and back.

No.5 engine Hercules, recently back from intermediate overhaul, will be the star of the
show, with all other available locos and visiting
engines from at least two other railways adding
to the spectacle.

No 3 Southern maid on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway RHDR

Ordered in 1926 and delivered on 20th April

1927, she was originally to be called Southern

Chief, but for some reason, Captain Howey

changed his mind and the nameplates were

removed before she entered service.

In 1946 Southern Maid was involved in an

accident and ended up in a dyke, after being

rammed by a lorry on a level crossing near

Dymchurch.

During her 1947 refit, the Maid received a large

capacity tender and a livery similar to that of

Green Goddess. However, in 1954 she received

a brown umber coat of paint and smoke

deflectors soon followed in 1955.

A French Grey livery was applied in 1959, a

Malachite green in 1965 and LNER Apple Green

in 1971, when the smoke deflectors were

removed. She has seen more changes of livery

than any other Romney loco.

During May 1998 she travelled up to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway in Cumbria for

the 75th birthday party of their loco River Esk.

Prior to her most recent overhaul, Southern Maid

appeared in the colours of the former South

Eastern & Chatham Railway. She currently has a

tender similar the one attached to Northern Chief

and her whistle is an ex-Isle of Wight section

'hooter' from the Southern Railway.

Southern Maid returned to New Romney for the

Steam and Diesel Gala in May 2003, following 

an extensive overhaul. Her new livery, lining and

lettering is based on that as seen on the

locomotive when delivered in 1927

Opened  on July 16 1927, with locomotive Hercules hauling the inaugural train from Hythe to New Romney.

When first opened to the public the line only covered, in double track, the eight miles between the two small towns.

But owner Captain Jack Howey soon had his eye on extending the line and in 1928 double tracks carried the trains to Dungeness running close to Greatstone - a ride of 13.5 miles.

The railway operates one-third scale locomotives, both steam and diesel powered – and a fleet of passenger carriages which include mobile bars.

Trains run at around 25 mph, slowing down to negotiate the numerous level crossings and bridges which carry the track across the landscape.

Locomotives are based on classic British and Canadian-Pacific Railroad designs – with the latter being constructed as it was felt the enclosed cabs would give drivers more protection against the rain and wind which occasionally sweeps across the Marsh.

Their names include Dr Syn, the legendary smuggler of the area, and
